A Shout Out and a YIPPEE it Works

First is the shout out to Jillee over at One Good Thing by Jillee. I was desperate last Thursday evening. My husband and son came home from work (they work in the oil fields) and they were beyond dirty. They stank (that’s right STANK) and I thought I would have to burn the clothes they were wearing.  I had been using store bought Shout and was not very pleased in the results but hey it was clean dirt and well they were just going to get it dirty again. But Thursday evening changed that, I was out of shout and they vetoed the idea of burning the clothes. So I had to do something. I had printed of Jillee’s laundry cheat sheet and stuck it on the refrigerator door. I looked at it and I had everything I needed to make her homemade shout. So I set to work making the solution and then working it into the stains. Just let me say the before and after pictures do not do her product justice. These are gray medium weight hoodies and they were NASTY when I started. They even wear these hoodies under a pair of coveralls. Thank goodness I don't have to wash them.
I put my solution in a old dishwashing liquid bottle and was able to really soak the grease and grime. I used a scrub brush and really worked it down into the fibers working from the back and front. This was a challenge seeing as the hoodie had a pocket on the front. I then let it soak several hours in cold water (my washer is not hooked up to hot water) and added borax and washing soda to the water. After 4 hours I ran the washer with the water that was in there with just the two hoodies. After that cycle I added more work clothes Jillee's homemade liquid washing detergent and more washing soda and borax. Ran it through the extra long cycle then hung the hoodies to dry. Not only did the all the clothes smell and look clean but hubby even commented that the hoodies looked better than when I used the store bought stuff. I figure another couple of soakings and washings I might just have them presentable again. LOL that is if I can keep them from wearing them to work but I don’t think that will happen they donned them this morning before heading out.

Like I said they still need work but the homemade stuff took out the ground in grease and grime that the storebought stuff was leaving behind.

Now for the YIPPEE it really does work part…I am sure you have heard you can grow green onions in from the roots of the ones by from the store…well doubting Thomasine thought she would try this and this morning I noticed little green shoots popping out.  I am so excited. I wonder how many times I can do this? I can't wait to find out. I will have to try carrots and celery next :-)

  1. Thanks for the heads up on the Shout substitute. I've done the green onions before and was able to keep them going for a coupe of months until my cat knocked the container over.

    1. Our cat doesn't knock them over she tries to eat them *sigh* I must plant her some grass.

I have used the shout substitute several times now on the hoodies and I have deemed them wearable in public now. This wonder sauce as my husband calls it even took out the ground in grease that had gone through the dryer. Yes it took some elbow grease on my part but now they look wonderful.
