I know the title is confusing. I know today is Thursday but it is my Friday at work. We have had a wild week. Much of the southeast of the US has had typical spring weather this past week...t-storms, rain, hail and those dreaded (and dangerous) tornadoes.
Actually this all started a couple of months ago when our car bit the dust and refused go one more mile. It sitting in the yard dead. We have been without a car payment for 10 years and really didn't want to go that route, we are trying to stay out of debt and save for retirement. So we had saved and saved and had hoped to buy a used car and pay cash for it. The one we wanted the guy would not deal and he was asking way too much for the car (more than it was worth...yes we did our homework) so we gave up and stopped at a car lot and was thrilled when they had a Jeep Liberty, the only thing it was way more than we had so that meant financing. Guess what since we have had no active credit for the past 7 years we have no credit. We found out that bad credit is better than no credit. We were financed as first time car buyers so that means higher interest rates. I almost fainted when I added up the car payment and the increase in the car insurance (yes the insurance almost tripled - full coverage is expensive even with a good driving record) so now we have an extra $500 coming out each month. Here I was looking so forward to being able to quit working next year after the boys were out of college. Nope have to work to pay for the new to us jeep. Thank goodness it is only financed for 36 months.
Saturday arrived and all hell broke loose and well you may want to get a cup of coffee and get comfy this could take a while. Through it all I can say we have been truly blessed beyond measure this week and not just with the new to us jeep.
Tornadoes...winds of mass destruction. People look at me funny when I say give me a hurricane any day over a tornado. What they don't realize is with a hurricane you get several days notice and you can grab your stuff and run. With a tornado well you are lucky if you can make it to a safe room or a storm shelter. So yeah give me that hurricane any day.
Saturday evening we lost power and did not realize the weather around us was as bad as it was. So we were kind of lax-a-daisy through it. I didn't panic until the lights came back on and we started getting weather reports. My baby (ok so he is 21 one but he is still my baby) was right in the path of a HUGE tornado and he was an hour away. God was gracious and son was safe.
We were in total shock when the news reports started pouring in and there was mass destruction all around us. Five miles south of us a whole community was destroyed as well as several businesses and warehouses. Twenty miles west of us the same thing at national chain hardware was destroyed as well as several other business. Five miles north of us and all the way to where son was destroyed. It looked like a giant had come through with a large weed eater and whacked the tops out of trees and twisted them, kicked roof tops off and flipped cars and truck. But we just had a few limbs down at our house and garbage cans blown over. God was gracious.

Yesterday #2 son tried cooking and had a kitchen fire and again God was gracious and all was spared. No that is not our house that is just what I was imagining on the way home after we got the call that smoke was pouring out of roof. We will need to replace the vent hood and paint (the kitchen was next on the list to paint any way it just got moved up a couple of months). The cabinets will need a good scrubbing inside and out as well as everything that is in the cabinets. Everything in the kitchen is covered in smokey soot. But no major damage. What has to be done will be less than the insurance deductible. So we apply the elbow grease ourselves. The only clothes that will have to washed are the ones that were waiting to be folded. The bedroom doors were closed so the bedrooms were spared from the smoke. I can not sing His praises enough...God was gracious. No lives were lost and we still have all of our possessions.
Now that you have seen how stressful my week has been, and today is only Thursday, you understand now why I am so happy that today is my Friday.
